Complete renovation and loft conversion of grade II listed building near Bath

This major project was commissioned by the client as a complete design and build package, where the architect provided some technical drawings and we provided everything else, including interior and lighting design, as well as designing and building three bathrooms. Our clients developed such confidence in our judgement that they simply gave us a budget and let us take it from there.

It involved removing very large parts of the interior of a beautiful historic farmhouse and then faithfully putting them back together – but brighter, cleaner and, frankly, transformed.

For the loft work, we completely removed the roof, stripped the space back to the primary structural timbers and opened up the space to the apex. To achieve this, we had to build a scaffolded tent over the entire building – an epic undertaking in itself. The team then restored and repaired oak trusses and beams, making adaptations with new pieces (ensuring their appearance matched the others), replaced the roof, and rebuilt the dormer windows exactly as they had been before, even to the extent of putting back existing window glass – the preferred method for heritage restoration. The result is a set of wonderfully spacious loft rooms.

We restored all the windows and stonework, replacing concrete pointing with breathable traditional lime. Most of the ground floor interior was restored and redecorated, and in the living room we fitted a stunning oak parquet floor.

Today Manor Farmhouse is a striking example of a home hundreds of years old brought completely up to date without losing any of its character and uniqueness.
